How often should gutters be cleaned in Michigan?

Properties with heavy tree cover directly over the roofline often need a third visit, because a single clogged season here usually ends in an ice dam.

What happens if gutters are left uncleaned through winter?

Accepted Answer

Blocked gutters cannot drain meltwater, so it refreezes at the roof edge and builds an ice dam. Water then backs up under the shingles and into the fascia, soffit and wall cavity. That damage is far more expensive than the cleaning, and it is the single most common reason we get emergency calls in January and February.

Do you clean the downspouts as well as the troughs?

Yes. Clearing the troughs alone is half a job - most blockages sit at the downspout elbow or at the outlet where the trough meets the drop. We flush each downspout and confirm water runs clear at the bottom before finishing.

Can clogged gutters damage a foundation?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is the damage people notice last. Water overflowing at the roofline lands hard against the foundation instead of being carried away, saturating the soil around it. Over repeated freeze-thaw cycles that pressure works on basement walls and shows up as seepage or cracking.

Do you install gutter guards?

We fit guards where they genuinely help and say so when they will not. Under pine or with heavy seed fall, fine debris still passes through most screens and can pack down harder than open gutters would, so guards reduce the frequency of cleaning rather than removing the need for it.

How do I know my gutters need attention?

Water spilling over the front edge during rain, plants or seedlings growing out of the trough, staining or streaking down the fascia, a trough visibly sagging away from the roofline, or granules and grit collecting where the downspout discharges.

Is the work done from a ladder or from the roof?

Accepted Answer

From a ladder in almost all cases. It is safer for the crew and avoids foot traffic on shingles, which matters on older roofs and in cold weather when asphalt is brittle.
